The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of shoreline between the cities of Positano and Vietri sul Mare on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy. It is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the Lattari Mountains. The sharp contrast between the pristine waters and the sheer cliffs create a breathtaking vista that has captured the imagination of travellers for centuries. The tale of Homer's Odyssey contains descriptive passages of the bays and coves of this area and recently the Amalfi Coast was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One great attraction of the Amalfi Coast is the numerous hiking paths but one path stands out from the rest - The Path of the Gods or Il Sentiero degli Dei. This challenging and awe-inspiring trail takes roughly four and a half hours to traverse. Along the way, use the jagged coastline as a guide and the island of Capri as a distant beacon in the shimmering sea.

Getting to the path is just as difficult as walking the path. The bus ride from Amalfi to Bomerano is fraught with seemingly dangerous turns. Get off at the stop for the main square in Bomerano and head toward the Bomerano church. From the church, take route 27 to begin the trek. It veers off to the left of the church. Pass by stone steps, narrow footbridges, and a cave filled with medieval animal pens before reaching the first glimpses of the beautiful scenery. Continue along a mule track to Colle la Serra and then pick up red waypoints to cross the mountain side. Eventually, the village of Nocelle is within reach, and it's a great place to rest and hydrate. Exit the village and look over at the vast ravine. The final leg of the journey passes through Monte Pertuso and finishes in Positano.

There are a couple of alternative routes that lead to Il Sentiero degli Dei. From Praiano, join the path just downhill of Colle la Serra by hiking through the Convent of San Domenico. It is located at the foot of Mount St Angelo a Tre Pizzi. The village of Vettica Maggiore and the archipelago Li Galli are visible from the Convent. Another trail leading to the path heads uphill from Praiano and joins the path near Bomerano. Spend a few moments on this trail at the plaque commemorating Giustino Fortunato. He was an economist that named the path.

The walking season is typically between September and June. The weather is mild during the autumn and winter, with temperatures rarely dropping below 15° celsius. The warm weather during the spring is great for long hikes along the Amalfi Coast. The summer time is perfect for swimming in the refreshing coastal waters. Waterproof jackets and hiking boots are a must have during damp days. On sunny days, take a sun hat. Pack sufficient food and water bottles for the long trek. It is recommended to travel with a group and take frequent breaks along the path.
