Google clarifies TLD issues ahead of registry deadline

Google launches buy button feature and updates Product Listing Ads

Google has commenced roll-out of the buy button feature in search ads, though users will find that the button is not an actual button after all. The feature, known as Purchases On Google, was announced along with a number of other updates to mobile Product Listing Ads (PLAs). With Purchases On Google, the search engine giant is intent on helping merchants boost online conversion rates.

Google changes Search Console, but Penguin update some time away

Google Search Console, the feature previously known as Google Webmaster Tools, is to start sending notifications to fewer people in respect of average notification types. This is according to Gary Illyes, Google Webmaster Trends Analyst. Google’s intention is that the change will take effect in August and its impact will be limited to the average type of notification only. The change will not impact on the way in which the search engine giant issues notifications to webmasters in respect of more critical messages. Such a message might be for a site that is being hacked, for instance.

Google search app starts offering “did you mean” corrections

Users of Google are likely familiar with the search engine giant’s “did you mean” function, and many of them appreciate a function that means they do not have to remember how to spell a particular word or phrase. This correction function typically appears on screen when a user submits a search query containing a typo or an error. The “did you mean” corrections generally appear in search results on a PC, but it appears that some users have started to see them appearing in the Google app for Android as well.

Yahoo tests Google-powered search results

Search engine Yahoo has said that it is conducting tests using search results from Google. The move has come about following a recently concluded renegotiation with Microsoft. Until recently, Yahoo was reliant on the Microsoft-owned Bing search engine for its search results. Following conclusions of negotiations with Microsoft in April, Yahoo opened the door to the possibility of engaging with other partners for the purposes of search.

Mobile search outstripping desktop in UK

Individual users of mobile search are not alone. Mobile search volume has surpassed desktop search volume in the UK. This is according to Eileen Naughton, managing director and vice president for sales and operations at Google UK-Ireland. Naughton told an audience at London Tech Week during a 15th June presentation that over half of all online searches in the UK are carried out on mobile devices. Naughton also said that mobile searches are outstripping desktop searches for the UK in respect of views of YouTube videos.

Is a Google/Twitter merger inevitable?

The deal with Google announced by Twitter has got a lot of people talking. Under the deal, advertisers can purchase ads on Twitter via the Doubleclick buying system developed by Google, with the result that Google displays real-time tweets as actual search results. The deal has led to gossip that Google is using the agreement as a kind of test-run to determine if acquiring Twitter would make sense. Merger talk was very evident at the Engage 2015 social media conference in Prague, held in May.

Penguin and Panda updates: the latest from Google

Has anybody noticed that Penguin has a tendency to run slowly? Well, Gary Illyes, Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst, has admitted as such, telling the SMX Advanced search marketing conference in Seattle on 2nd June that the search engine giant is working on a process that will see Penguin update in real time. If this scenario does indeed unfold, the algorithm will be in receipt of data that is refreshed on a continuing basis. At present, data has to be refreshed manually in order to determine whether there have been any ranking changes for sites affected by Penguin.
